Day 2: Extract emotions, vocab, acronyms and more from texts

Exercises

  1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser. If you don't already have it, you can download it here.
  2. Open a piece of text in the Edge browser. I recommend a newspaper article, but you can also open a website or PDF.
  3. In the chat box, ask Copilot to extract a list of emotion-related words from the article, using this prompt:
    1. "Extract a list of words related to emotions from this article."
  4. Then, ask Copilot to show you how these words are used in the article, using this prompt: "
    1. Create a table with each of these emotion words, as well as how they are used in the article. Include the exact phrase or sentence from the article. Add an English translation."
    2. Want to explore more ways to work with emotion words? Check out our tutorial Say More Than I'm Fine.
  5. You can use the same method to extract information - and not just vocabulary - from an article. For example, try these prompts:
    1. "Extract the names of all the people listed in this article, and tell me about them in one sentence"
    2. "Extract the names of all the people or organizations listed in this article, and tell me who they are or what they do, and why they're relevant in the context of [topic]."
  6. Got a complicated document? Why not ask AI to extract all the acronyms and tell you what they stand for? Use this prompt:
    1. " Extract all the acronyms in this document and tell me what they stand for."
  7. Looking for more technical vocabulary? Try this prompt:
    1. "Give me a list of at least 20 multi-word [field] terms used in the document."
  8. Try searching for one of the terms to confirm that it's in your document. Use Command + F (Mac) or Control + F (Windows) to search on the page. Type your term. You might even see the new Copilot prompt, "What does the page say about [your term]?" If so, click it, and see how Copilot responds!
